We process tungsten carbide special components from the prototype to the series.

What does tungsten carbide mean?

The production of tungsten carbide hard metal can be done in different ways. Some common method of making tungsten carbide powder is to create a chemical reaction at very high temperatures, the tungsten reacts with carbon. The tungsten carbide forms into a crystalline mass during cooling. Different sizes of tungsten carbide particles are required for different applications, which have a significant impact on the properties of the final product. At this point in the manufacturing process, the powder is ground to the desired particle size so that it can finally be combined with cobalt or another hard metal. A soft wax is also temporarily added to hold the items together. The wet tungsten carbide slurry is now dried to remove most of the moisture.

Now the powder can be shaped. Depending on the component geometry and quantity, dry pressing or an injection molding process is used for this. After this production step, the component is available as a green compact.

Now the wax binder can be burned out. This allows the metal binder to melt and settle around the hard tungsten particles.

After the sintering process, the tungsten carbide can be processed, this is often done by grinding.

Tungsten carbide reaches a hardness of 690 HV 30 to 2250 HV 30, so only diamond is harder than tungsten carbide.

Is tungsten carbide ceramic?

Compared to pure tungsten or a tungsten alloy, tungsten carbide is ceramic. However, because of its name, it is often referred to as a metal. This is where the name hard metal comes from. One of the greatest similarities to pottery is the processing and manufacture. Only with special tools and a lot of know-how can tungsten carbide be processed so that the desired tolerances can also be achieved.
