What is Nitinol and where is it used?

 

Nitinol is a nickel-titanium alloy and the most well-known shape memory alloy.

Nitinol is the intermetallic phase NiTi with an ordered cubic crystal structure different from titanium and nickel. It consists mainly of nickel (about 55%), another large part of titanium. The alloy can be used up to 650 °C, is corrosion-resistant and high-strength, but is elastically deformable by up to approx. 8%.

The transformation temperature can be influenced via the alloy ratio. Nitinol alloys with a low transformation temperature of e.g. B. 0 °C are colloquially called superelastic. At room temperature, superelastic material behaves similarly to spring steel or spring wire. Nitinol is often used for surgical tools or implants because of its great malleability and good corrosion resistance, but it is also often used in commercial mechanical engineering.

 

Nitinol alloys with a high transformation temperature of 80 °C, for example, are colloquially called memory alloys or shape memory alloys. If wires, foils and sheets of this alloy are deformed at room temperature, they take on the bent new shape. If the deformed nitinol is heated above the transformation temperature / AF temperature (austenite finish temperature), it will form back to its original shape. Memory Alloy alloys as well as the super-elastic Nitinol alloy are used. The basic shape of the Nitionol component can be embossed by annealing at approx. 500 °C and a holding time of approx. 20 minutes. We can take over the heat treatment of the Nitinol for you if you decide to buy the NiTi from us.

Nitinol shape memory alloy

Nitinol NiTi Einwegeffekt

The one-way effect of the shape memory alloy Nitinol, also known as NiTi alloy, is understood to mean the return of the Nitinol to its original state when it is heated.

 

In its cold state, the NiTi alloy has a martensite structure. If the wire, rod or foil is stretched within the strain range of the martensite plateau, the material can be shaped into any desired shape. This shape of the Nitinol component is retained as long as there is no change in temperature. As the component heats up and reaches the austenite start (AS) temperature, the material begins to deform back. The material is restored to its original condition after the austenite finish (AF) temperature is reached. Depending on the NiTi alloy, the AF temperature is between -100 and 150°C.

When the Nitinol component begins to cool, martensite formation begins again. This is completed when the Martensite Finish (MF) temperature is reached. This process of deforming the Nitinol shape memory alloy can be repeated any number of times. Nitinol NiTi Zweiwegeffekt

The Nitinol shape memory alloy two-way effect means the independent deformation of the NiTi material due to temperature changes without the application of force.


The nitinol wire, nitinol foil or nitinol rod remembers its predetermined shape in the low-temperature phase and the shape in the high-temperature phase. This process can be repeated as often as you like and is therefore an interesting effect in the development of sensors and measuring instruments.
