Machining tungsten presents some challenges. Tungsten or tungsten alloys are brittle at room temperature and ductile at elevated temperatures. The brittle-ductile transition temperature is also taken into account during machining. In most machining processes, machining takes place at temperatures above the transformation temperature.

Tungsten alloys bring some advantages in machinability. We mainly use lanthanum oxide, cerium oxide and potassium for this. Tungsten alloys not only have the advantage that they are easier to machine, the recrystallization temperature and thus the ductility also increase - which in turn increases the strength.
