Silicon nitride is chosen as the construction material when high strength, toughness and hardness of the component is required.

In addition to low thermal expansion, silicon nitride has good thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. The application temperature is 1300°C under oxygen and up to 1600°C under protective gas or vacuum.

For this purpose, a steel mold is usually produced by milling or die-sinking in order to press the green compact. Depending on the component geometry and requirement profile, the green compact is further processed. Sintering takes place at high temperatures and high gas pressure, which means that the silicon nitride particles are compressed.


Finally, the sintered blank can be milled, turned or ground with diamond tools. This processing step enables high surface quality and dimensional accuracy to be achieved.
